Linear Facility APS Gila River Monitoring Project

EPG conducted cultural resource monitoring and limited data recovery to support the construction efforts of the APS Gila River Transmission Project, consisting of two 500kV transmission lines, an 80-acre switchyard, and a 230kV interconnection line. Located in Maricopa County, Arizona, the 20-mile long construction right-of-way crossed a number of significant archaeological sites and historic structures. It was determined that avoidance and monitoring during construction was an appropriate means of mitigation. Consultation with the BLM archaeologist also resulted in the collection of three isolated pot breaks. One of the most interesting sites, the Butterfield Stage Road, is an historic wagon trail that follows the general alignment of a corridor called the Gila Trail or Southern Overland Route. Initially used by Native American groups, the trail was also used by Spaniards during the 18th century and by other European settlers in the 19th century. Father Francisco Eusebio Kino and Captain Juan Mateo Manje are reported to have used the route in 1699. Within the project area, the trail is well defined as a roughly straight segment measuring approximately 9 feet in width. Construction crews were informed about the sensitivity of the site; it was barricaded to prevent vehicle traffic, and as a result, no damage occurred to the trail.
