CULTURAL RESOURCES

El Paso Corporation Line 2121

EPG’s Cultural Resources Group completed a cultural resource inventory study in support of a 17-mile El Paso Natural Gas pipeline replacement project located in western Arizona, just east of the Colorado River. This study identified 29 previously recorded archaeological sites, which were revisited during fieldwork. Two newly recorded sites, consisting of historic trash scatters, were also recorded. Of the 31 sites identified, 1 is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), 14 were recommended eligible for listing, and 16 were recommended as being not eligible for listing.

A number of the NRHP sites contain segments of prehistoric trails, which are common in this region of Arizona. The Fort Mojave Indian Tribe considers these features important elements of their heritage and views their preservation as a cultural resource priority. El Paso Natural Gas was able to restrict the project to previously disturbed areas where these features occurred and propose cultural resource monitoring during construction to avoid any inadvertent impacts. Furthermore, a subsequent study was undertaken to gather more information on the trails to investigate whether they represented components of a much larger trail system.
