Siphon Draw Drainage Improvements Project

The Siphon Draw Drainage Improvements Project is a partnership between the District and the City of Mesa, and includes a detention basin, maintenance access roads to and around the basin, and a 1.3-mile long channel with maintenance roads, and associated structures. Landscaping, trails, and other multi-use facilities were also provided along the channel alignment and within the basins. The main goal of the Project is to intercept flood water at Meridian Road to protect properties to the west of Meridian Road and detain the floodwater such that the existing Project outlet capacity of 500 cfs is not exceeded. The project included pre-design, value engineering, final design, and the preparation of construction plans, special provisions, and an engineer’s estimate for the Siphon Draw Drainage Improvement. Additionally, stakeholder coordination, including the City of Apache Junction and the Arizona State Land Department, and facilitation of public meetings were important aspects of the project. EPG led the landscape aesthetic design for the project including working with the engineering team in development of the form of the basin and channel, tall pot planting and hydroseeding design, and the design of aesthetic treatment of the structures. Additionally, EPG led the public involvement activities of the consultant team for the project, including preparation of the project newsletters/mailings and participation in the public meeting. The landscape services for the project included a detailed site analysis and additional data collection, development of preliminary alternative schematics, preparation of Conceptual Site Development Plan and Conceptual Structural Designs, and Final Landscape Architectural Design and Construction Documents.
