EPG was selected by Waste Management of Arizona (WM) to provide design, construction documents, and construction observation services for the Butterfield Landfill Demonstration project which is located in Mobile, Arizona. Butterfield Landfill is one of the largest landfill facilities in the continental United States. During the design phase, EPG met with WM engineers to review the landfill's goals and objectives regarding erosion control, aesthetic treatments, and visual mitigation. WM further mentioned that any artificial irrigation was not permitted on the landfill due to potential infiltration of water through the landfill cap.
Other means and methods of “irrigation” would need to be considered for the project area. EPG discussed a number of planting methods using multiple hydroseed mixes with container plants and tall pot plants.
EPG designed the demonstration area using the tall pot planting method, which is used exclusively by the Maricopa Flood Control District (MCFCD) for their projects that require native plant restoration. The tall pot planting method utilizes a “DriWATER” irrigation product, which is used as an irrigation supplement. This allows the plant to receive water without installing a drip irrigation system. The product will need to be reapplied within 45-90 days, depending upon the plant type and weather conditions.
EPG observed the installation process during construction and prepared field reports and a daily photo log to document progress.
