Earl Edgar Recreation Facility

The landscape architects and designers of EPG created a conceptual master plan for the renovation of a multi-sport recreation facility in Buckeye, Arizona. EPG lead the design team and together with the general contractor, the much-used existing 19-acre facility was revamped to meet the needs of the community.

The existing park facility consisted of a ball field quad, including two new Arizona Diamondback sponsored little league fields; two outdated softball fields, and an outdated, unmarked, and unlit soccer and football field. The design team was to come up with a master plan that showed the clean-up of the existing designated field areas, the addition of a new park maintenance yard and building, a post-tension basketball court, batting cages, a multi-use path system, central plaza and picnic area, a primary and secondary drop-off area, a certified boundless playground, field lighting, path lighting, light re-grading, landscaping, and an irrigation system that supplied the park with reclaimed water from the town’s wastewater treatment facility. The plan also consisted of the demolition of existing basketball courts, racquetball courts, and batting cages.

Extensive design from EPG included the general park layout, central plaza and picnic area, trail system including drop off nodes, vehicular turn-around, and the certified boundless playground. It was a fast-moving contract in which the construction was completed in February 2009. Upon beginning the design phase, the supply of irrigation to the park switched from an underground storage tank to the use of reclaimed water from the nearby wastewater treatment plant. A 12-inch effluent waterline was constructed from the plant to the park. Annual savings from the use of reclaimed water for irrigation will save the town approximately $100,000 per year.
