Huhugam Heritage Center

In collaboration with the architectural firm developing the Cultural Center Museum Building, the landscape architectural team developed design concepts and construction plans and provided construction observation services for this unique facility. The project objective was to provide interpretive gardens, plazas, and courtyards that demonstrate landscape elements and plant varieties which contribute to the cultural history of the historic Indian communities. The overall courtyard space is enclosed with a circular retaining wall constructed from gabions and configured in a pattern to emulate the weave of the baskets that the Gila’s are recognized for. The garden areas are arranged to demonstrate the historic irrigation channels dug that enabled the native tribes to cultivate the desert soils. Planting areas demonstrate both food and medicinal plant types and also portray the various vegetative communities used to forge their livelihood. The courtyard also was designed for use by the community to function as an event area for gatherings, ceremonies, and portray special occasions.
