The Phoenix metropolitan area, like many urbanizing areas, is a collection of cities and towns, each with their own open space and trail systems and destination areas. The Valley’s Pedestrian Freeway establishes a regional master plan of the major trails and destination areas identified by each jurisdiction, providing a means to travel throughout the metropolitan area without having to get into a car. The Master Plan for the Pedestrian Freeway specifically identifies existing and planned trails, as well as gaps within the system and how they might be connected. EPG assisted Valley Forward in developing the Pedestrian Freeway master plan, passport (a fold up map for distribution identifying the trails and gems), and website. EPG utilized GIS to create the structure for the mapping. The website (www.valleyforward.org) utilizes Google Earth technology to view the trail system and location of gems (key destination areas identified by the local communities), as well as display photographs and information regarding them. Valley Forward presented EPG with the 2007 Leadership Award for their work on the project.
